Biographical detail
Jerry Carnahan is a native of Cowlitz County, Washington. After graduating from Kelso High School in 1981, he entered Lower Columbia College, Longview Washington where he studied Engineering applications. Jerry joined the Navy in January 1986 and completed recruit training in San Diego, California. After graduating boot camp his first assignment was Boiler Technician ‘A’ School at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, IL which he completed in June 1986.
BTFN Carnahan’s first permanent duty assignment was aboard the USS Dewey DDG-45, stationed in Charleston, South Carolina from Jun 1986 to Jan 1990. From Mar 1991 to Sep 1995, BT3 Carnahan was stationed on the USS Mauna Kea AE-22 stationed at Concord Naval Weapons Station, Concord, CA where he earned 2nd Class Petty Officer and his surface warfare qualification. After completing back to back sea duty tours he accepted orders to enlisted naval recruiting duty and reported to Naval Recruiting District San Francisco and assigned to Navy Recruiting Station Chico, CA from Nov 1995 to Nov 1998. As a recruiter he earned the title of Recruiter of the Year for the district and was command promoted the rank of 1st Class Petty Officer and reassigned as Recruiter in Charge of NRS Chico. After a successful tour of recruiting he was assigned to the Reactor Department aboard the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 from Nov 1998 to Oct 2001. Two years after reporting aboard MM1 Carnahan was advanced to MMC Carnahan. After leaving the Carl Vinson Chief Carnahan returned to another tour of recruiting duty in Chico, CA from Nov 2001 to Aug 2004. Chief Carnahan’s last sea tour was on the USS Lake Champlain CG-57, where he was the 3M coordinator from Aug 2004 to Sep 2007.
Jerry’s final active duty tour was at the Dept of Naval Science Texas A&M at Galveston, TX from Nov 2007 to Nov 2010. Chief Petty Officer Carnahan’s duties at the Texas A&M NROTC unit included Supply Technician, Urinalysis coordinator, DTS administrator, command IA coordinator, senior enlisted advisor, instructor, drill team instructor, and student advisor for all freshman NROTC students. Jerry accepted the supply technician job at Arizona State University and started working as the Supply Technician in December of 2010.
Personal Awards include: Navy and Marine Corps. Commendation Medal with a gold star, Navy and Marine Corps. Achievement Medal with four gold stars, Navy unit Commendation, Meritorious unit Commendation, Navy Battle E with wreath, Good Conduct Medal with Silver Star, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with eight stars, Navy Recruiting Service Ribbon with 13 gold wreaths, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait).
Jerry is married to the former Sandy Ellen Hinkley of Toledo, Washington. They reside in Queen Creek, AZ. They have one child, Neala Johanna Carnahan.
